Parenting in Japan and the World

 Hello guys,

In todays blogg I will compare Japanese parenting to Swedish. Unfortunately I missed the class when the topic was discussed so i will solely base my assumptions on the video material. When it comes to parenting in Japan I feel like parents are more caring compared to Sweden. For example when parents share bed with their kids for such a long time. Because of the Japanese amae I feel like parents can be overly caring of their children in their younger years.

According to japanconsult.com the Japanese maternity leave is 98 days. This is not so much compared to Swedens 480 days which is split between the two parents. For this reason I believe Swedish parents doesnt need to be overly caring of their kids since they have such a long time to spend time and care for their kids, in comparison to Japanese parents who may need to stress the caring situation before they need to go back and focus on their work. I also think the long maternity leave in Sweden is the reason that being a stay at home wife is a very rare phenomenon.

Finally I believe that maternity leave should be as in Sweden when both parents are entitled to 240 days each. This results in also the dad taking care in the caring for the children so not all the burden is on the wife. It also creates a strong bond between the dad and the child which may be hard otherwise if the dad works during the childs younger years.

  1. I really like the conclusion, I wish paternity/maternity leave would be longer in Lithuania too.

  2. I don't remember how long it was, but I think Emilia said that in her country there was a very long maternity leave, during which the parent legally can't be fired, fire.
